expedition cruising
To the ends of the Earth
Journey to the ends of the Earth with us and explore some of the planet's most remote regions. The polar landscapes of Antarctica and the Arctic offer unmatched natural beauty and solitude, with vast snowy expanses that are among the world’s last frontiers. Discover unique wildlife and, if you’re fortunate, witness the stunning Aurora Borealis in the Arctic or Aurora Australis in Antarctica.
Expedition cruising is an adventurous and immersive style of travel that focuses on exploring remote and often untouched regions. Unlike traditional cruises that might focus on luxury and relaxation, expedition cruises are about discovery, education, and experiencing the raw beauty of nature & its wildlife. It's all about the destination!
Expedition ships
Expedition Ships are smaller vessels, typically accommodating up to 200 passengers, allowing for access to remote areas and a more intimate experience.
In Antarctica this is particularly important, as the size of ship will dictate where and how often you are able to disembark.
Expedition ships focus on exploration, wildlife observation, and education with onboard experts. There will be flexible itineraries that can change based on weather and wildlife sightings, allowing for spontaneous and unique experiences. Activities wise, you can expect daily zodiac excursions, landings on remote beaches, guided hikes, kayaking, and wildlife watching.
Whilst its true the focus of expedition cruising is not the luxury or on-board entertainment, you can still expect high levels of service, delicious cuisine, expert guides and even a sauna & hot tub.
An expedition cruise can be a great option for solo travellers, as they are social & friendly.
We only offer expedition cruises that have a strong commitment to minimising their environmental impact and promoting conservation.
Polar Wildlife
Arctic Wildlife
It's true to say that the polar regions are home to some of the world's most hardy & interesting wildlife. In the northern hemisphere, you'll find the iconic polar bear, narhwal, walrus, arctic fox and reindeer (we recommend Svalbard in particular for wildlife). Enthusiasts will love the arctic region for the diversity of wildlife.
Antarctic Wildlife
Antarctica on the other hand is home to a greater variety of marine life, many penguins, including the emperor penguin swim the icy waters alongside the many whales & a variety of seals including leopard, weddell, crabeater & elephant seal.
Whichever region you choose, be sure to take your camera, binoculars and stick close to the guides for insights.
When to visit
1
Antarctica - early season
November to December
Expect pristine ice landscapes and the beginning of the penguin courtship period. This is also the time to witness the formation of sea ice and enjoy spectacular snowy vistas. This is the best time to try snow shoeing and camping. By December the chicks start hatching and the whales arrive.
2
Antarctica - mid to late season
January to February
This period offers the warmest weather and the best opportunities for wildlife viewing, including seeing penguin chicks and seal pups.
March
This time is ideal for whale watching as they are more active. The melting ice allows for deeper exploration into the continent. The days are getting shorter.
3
Arctic
June to September
Warm weather, long days, and abundant wildlife. The sea ice has broken up enough to allow for ship exploration, and polar bears are most active. You can also hike on the tundra and visit local communities.
Late June to early July offers 24 hours of daylight. July & August offer the warmest temperatures.
You'll have a chance to see whales & polar bears throughout.
